The Walt Simon Courtyard of Courage

Vanguard University is honored to remember the legacy of Walt Simon, the award-winning basketball player, lifelong mentor, and inspirational coach to scores of teams across the globe.

After he went to be with the Lord in 2016, Walt’s transformative impact and legacy continued at Vanguard with the Walt Simon Courage Award, an honor recognizing a student athlete who displays courage and perseverance through difficult trials. This award and Walt’s influence transcend the court, the mat, or the field; it captures the heart of the Vanguard spirit at its most vulnerable, where young athletes demonstrate courage beyond their years in the face of hardship.

The Walt Simon Courtyard of Couragewill be a focal point between student life and the Freed Center, bridging athletics and the greater community–something Walt was skilled at throughout his life.

Vanguard is committed to furthering Walt’s memory in partnership with the Simon Family, Lions Athletics, and his dear friends. Together we have set out to create a special space in the new Freed Center for Leadership and Service named for Walt’s legacy. The Walt Simon Courtyard of Couragewill be a focal point between student life and the Freed Center, bridging athletics and the greater community–something Walt was skilled at throughout his life.

With the Walt Simon Courtyard of Courage, countless athletes, students, coaches, visiting teams, fans, and members of our community will be inspired and encouraged by his legacy of courage and faith.

Will you prayerfully consider joining us in this meaningful project? Together, our goal is to raise $100,000 to name a significant space after Walt’s legacy and commemorate his commitment to character and courage.

The Walt Simon Story

Walt’s basketball career began at Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles, where he first showcased his exceptional talents and earned All-State and All-American honors. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Rough Rider Hall of Fame in 2014. Walt continued to shine at Fullerton College. As a Hornet, he dominated the court during the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons, emerging as a prolific scorer and leader. Notably, he held the two-year scoring state record, amassing an 1,708 total points in just 63 games. Walt’s remarkable achievements earned him the title of State Player of the Year for two-consecutive seasons.

Following his local success, Walt’s journey took him to the University of Utah where he continued to excel. Averaging 15 points per game, he was recognized as a first-team All-League player and even claimed the title of Best Defensive Player in the conference during his senior year.

In 1968, the professional basketball world beckoned, and Walt was drafted by both the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics and the ABA’s Denver Rockets. His professional career spanned the United States and Europe where he played alongside and against some of the sport’s finest talents.

Walt’s passion for the game extended beyond his professional playing days. He transitioned into coaching, sharing his expertise and knowledge with players at various levels. Notably, he served as the head coach for a European professional team in the mid 1970s. From youth basketball to college programs, Walt’s impact was far-reaching. His coaching journey encompassed institutions such as Fresno State, CSU Fullerton, Concordia, Point Loma, and Vanguard as well as involvement with Mater Dei High School and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball. In his later years, Walt created the Basic Basketball School to develop young players.

Walt’s greatest joy, however, was his family–his wife, Sujin, daughter, Charisse, son, Miles, and his beloved grandchildren.

Walt impacted thousands of players throughout the world with his passion, kindness, and commitment to his players beyond the game. He is remembered dearly by all who had the opportunity to have him as a coach and mentor.
