A Christ-Centered Celebration: Vanguard Honors 2025 Graduates

On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Vanguard University celebrated the academic and spiritual achievements of more than 525 graduates during two uplifting commencement ceremonies—one for undergraduate students and one for graduate and professional education students. Held on the Mariners Church campus in Irvine, the day was filled with worship, joy, and powerful testimonies reflecting Vanguard’s mission to equip students for a Spirit-empowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service.

“Commencement is the highlight of my year,” shared President Michael J. Beals, Ph.D., who presided over his 11th Vanguard graduation. “I am energized by the joy the students bring to the stage: I like to see them scan the audience for their loved ones before we lock eyes, I shake their hand, and tell them, ‘We are so proud of you!’ This is one of the greatest privileges I have as president, and it’s at the heart of why so many of us said yes to the Lord to serve at Vanguard.”

The keynote speaker, Howard Booker, brought both inspiration and insight to the occasion. As Executive Director of the In-N-Out Burger Foundation, Booker has dedicated his career to serving vulnerable populations, with a focus on preventing child abuse and neglect. With more than two decades of experience at In-N-Out Burger—including roles in customer service, restaurant operations, and nonprofit leadership—he brings a holistic understanding of business, service, and purpose. A seasoned educator and speaker, Booker has guest lectured at Vanguard, Concordia University, and multiple California State University campuses, often emphasizing the importance of leadership rooted in faith and compassion. His address encouraged graduates to pursue their calling with integrity, resilience, and a heart for others, reminding them that true success is measured by service and impact.

The undergraduate student speaker, Amberly Gourlay, a History and Political Science major raised in Durban, South Africa, shared her journey of faith and growth at Vanguard. Her work as a College Corps Fellow, intern, and Student Government President fueled her passion for justice, service, and global leadership. “Just as God revealed to me that all He needs is our ‘yes,’ I hope to encourage others to step into His purpose,” she said.

Representing the graduate class, Cavario Jackson, a Master of Arts in Theology graduate, offered a powerful message of transformation and calling. A professional in corporate strategy and revenue management, Cavario’s time at Vanguard enriched his faith and equipped him for future ministry. “This degree is more than academic—it’s a foundational step in serving God’s people wherever He leads,” he reflected.
