Faith, Service, and Scholarship: Vanguard’s Global Education and Outreach 

Every summer, students from Vanguard University step beyond the classroom and into communities around the world, embracing a call to leadership and service that is deeply rooted in faith. Through Vanguard’s transformative Global Education and Outreach programs, students live out the university’s core values of truth, virtue, and service in dynamic, hands-on ways.  

This summer, 50 students (alongside 12 faculty and staff members) will engage with diverse cultures, deepening their spiritual walk and applying classroom knowledge in real-world contexts: the powerful intersection of learning and mission. Whether they’re leading children’s programs in Northern Ireland, supporting anti-human trafficking efforts in Southeast Asia, or sharing the Gospel in remote villages, these future leaders are being equipped to serve with humility, courage, and compassion.  
 
“At the core of these trips is a desire to follow Jesus by serving others,” said Drew Grateke, Assistant Director of Global Education and Outreach. “We want our students to experience the world with eyes wide open and hearts ready to respond to God’s call.” 

Faith in Action  

Each service team partners with local churches and ministries and participates in a wide range of efforts: leading children’s programs, supporting education, sharing the Gospel, performing music, and engaging in justice initiatives such as anti-human trafficking work. Through these experiences, students develop spiritual depth and servant leadership skills that last long after the trip ends. 

“Global service and learning trips give students a space to grow in ways the classroom can’t always provide,” Grateke explained. “They learn to trust God deeply, communicate across cultures, and lead with humility.” 

Equipped to Serve  

Preparation for these journeys is intentional and grounded in faith. Teams engage in pre-trip training that encompasses cultural understanding, ministry readiness, and spiritual formation. Students bond through shared prayer, devotionals, and team-building exercises, equipping them to serve with wisdom and compassion. 

“These trips are transformational,” said Grateke. “We’ve seen students discover new callings, grow in boldness, and return with a renewed sense of purpose in God’s mission.”
