Finding Belonging Through Community

For junior psychology major Lillian Avalos ’27, community has been the defining thread in her Vanguard University journey. Originally from Delhi, California, Avalos arrived at the Costa Mesa campus unsure of what to expect. But throughout the past three years, she found something more than just an education; she found a place where she belongs.

“I have felt welcomed, loved, and challenged while being here,” Avalos said. “Everything from the cafeteria to the campus community has been such a wonderful thing for me to have.”

Avalos is a student-athlete and a College Corps fellow, roles that have placed her in the heart of multiple communities. As an athlete, she’s discovered camaraderie and mutual understanding among her peers. “Being a student athlete has allowed me to find community among those who are also passionate about sports,” she said. “I could never feel alone because I have been blessed with such an amazing community.”

Her work with Meals on Wheels through the College Corps program added another layer to her campus experience. “The people at Meals on Wheels welcomed me with open arms and adopted me into their work family,” she shared. “I have always wanted to help people, and through College Corps, I truly am. I have been able to see the difference I am making within my community, and it’s such a beautiful thing to see and be a part of.”

Avalos says the support she receives from her professors, coaches, and supervisors has been pivotal to her growth at Vanguard. “My professors check in with me, ask me how I’m doing, and even remember small details that I forget I told them,” she shared. “Their encouragement and care have influenced the type of person I am in every aspect of my life.”

Whether it’s through shared meals, athletics, service work, or classroom interactions, Avalos’ story is one of a student who found not only a college, but a caring network of mentors and peers who have helped her grow. “This school has been so wonderful to me,” she said. “It makes me sad that I’m closer to being a senior than a freshman.”

Lillian is just a one example of the exceptional Vanguard students receiving a transformational, Christ-centered education because of the generosity of people like you.
